The Substance of Consciousness: Free Preview

Enjoy the following preview of my soon-to-be released book with Brandon Rickabaugh, The Substance of Consciousness: A Comprehensive Defense of Contemporary Substance Dualism (Wiley-Blackwell, 2023).
Why don’t your arguments for substance dualism also prove that cats and dogs have immaterial spirits that survive physical death? What in nature makes “clear” that only certain attributes exclusive to human beings can possibly imply an immaterial spirit? If a cat can employ more complex reasoning than a mosquito, does that imply the cat has an immaterial spirit?
Also, I’m a materialist/atheist: I would like to interact with you on substance dualism, but without committing that sin of “word-wrangling” which the apostle Paul forbade in 2nd Timothy 2:14. Do you have any idea how we could engage in such dialogue without committing such a sin? Wouldn’t that require that we dialogue without explaining why we disagree on how to define key terms?
