The “Nashville Statement”
September 8, 2017
We live in a time of critical moral confusion, not only about specific issues, but about how to engage in moral reasoning in the first place. No where is this more evident than in the area of sexual ethics. Our culture is a sex-crazed mess, and studies indicate that people from the age of 40 and younger tend to "reason" morally with their emotions and influenced by their peer group. The Bible places great moral weight on a theology and ethics of sexuality, and no single thinker in the history of the church has held that homosexuality, pederasty, bestiality, or sex outside of heterosexual, monogamous marriage is permissible.
Consequently, it is important for respected Christian thinkers to lead the way and reaffirm what the Bible teaches about sex. Martin Luther once said that if we are defending or standing up for Christ in all areas except the ones currently being attacked or compromised, then we are not defending or standing up for Christ. This is why I signed the Nashville Statement and I urge others to do this same.
